Queering Critical Literacy: Following Queer Participatory Media to Surface LGBTQ+ Ways of Being and Doing

Abstract

This paper contributes to scholarship on critical literacy as ways of “being and doing” by advancing queered critical literacies as practices to disidentify with the dominant present and imagine queer futures through critical humor (Vasquez, Janks, Comber, 2019, p. 300). Moves to position critical literacy as a perspective rather than a subject area can advance justice-oriented and liberatory pursuits. However, most of this research is situated in classrooms, which may circumscribe visions of justice and liberation that get taken up in pedagogy and practice. This paper examines LGBTQ+ participatory media cultures on YouTube to expand how we perceive the range of ways of being and doing with implications for design of curriculum and instruction to affirm queer and trans youth.
