Seeking a Way: A White Teacher's Journey From Critical Race Theory to Black Power Pedagogy

Abstract

This paper is an analysis of my own teacher experiential knowledge as informed by my reading of “racial realism” as theorized by Derrick Bell and select writings from the Black Power Movement. The methodology of this paper has three stages: first, narrative writing as theorized by Clandinin and Connelly (among others) is used to better understand my own past experience; second, I conduct short analysis of my understanding of racial realism and the work of the Black Power Movement; and finally, a fictional account re-storying my original experience in light of new understandings and providing a device to examine how my practice has changed.
