Designing Educative Curricular Materials for a Social-Emotional Learning Program in Out-of-School Learning Environments

Abstract

Social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula is increasingly designed for and adopted in out-of-school time (OST) contexts. Many educators in these settings need substantial training and support to implement SEL programs well, but shallow professional learning budgets and time shortages often prohibit rich, face-to-face professional learning experiences. This study documents a curriculum development process in which researchers and developers partner closely with OST educators. The study first examines OST educators’ perceptions of how various content-embedded educative curriculum materials (ECM) may support OST educators’ content knowledge, instructional delivery, and ability to impact student outcomes. Then, researchers examine how educators in OST classrooms use ECMs in SEL programming. Results have implications for future ECM design.
