Building Community CrEd: Supporting Beginning Critical Educators

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

This qualitative study details how two teacher educators and two graduate students at a state university engaged with recent graduates of the English education program in order to help them implement critical pedagogy in their classrooms. In this paper, we share details about the support group we created, State University Critical Educators, or SU CrEd. This group, consisting of eight secondary English teachers, met twice-monthly for one semester and explored topics in critical pedagogy. Interviews with participants indicated that they appreciated the opportunity to engage in a broad range of conversations about their practice. Moreover, all of the teachers stated that their participation in SU CrEd had a positive impact on their practice and/or activism in their school communities.
