Barriers to Success of Historically Black College and University Students in Education Gateway Course

Sat, April 18, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Several factors related to the early field experience were identified as contributing to the high rate of attrition in the course. Placing 120 students (all courses) per semester for early field experiences has been a challenge for the College of Education, especially considering that several other higher-level courses also require field experiences. Using survey data analyzed statistically using Chi-square testing researchers were able to identify significant barriers that kept students from completing the course. Researchers recommend that using online teaching video platforms could serve as a solution to support student achievement in gateway education courses.
