The purpose of this two-part study was to investigate the optimal length for a page in a digital textbook. In two connected experiments (Study 1 survey and Study 2 survey and eye-tracking data) college students were randomly assigned to read the same chapter presented as long page or short page layout to assess the effect of different page lengths on learning and engagement. Students assigned to the short page condition were statistically significant more confident in their learning. Eye-tracking visualizations showed that shorter pages create more consistent attention throughout the experience, less reading fatigue; but led to statistically higher time on task. Both eye-tracking visualizations and students’ perception data indicated that the shorter version provided a more engaging reading experience.
