When "Even" Is Uneven: "Inclusion" as Exclusion

Abstract

The main objective of this paper is to provide a critical view of one of the seemingly most innocent, popular and inclusive statements (and images) used in public (especially in educational institutions) through autoethnographic inquiry. Overall this paper aims to point out the problematic nature of some of the so-called ‘inclusive statements’ in the name of welcoming/tolerating the outcasts through autoethnographic inquiry. More specifically, this paper aims to demonstrate the marginalizing and power assertive nature of seemingly ‘inclusive statements.’ Another objective of this paper is to provide others who feel marginalized a way of thinking that might be helpful in dealing with such issues.
