The Transformative Nature of Collaboration: Examining the Impact of a One-Year STEM-Education Collaborative Project

Abstract

Recruitment and retention of teachers has been an ongoing challenge, particularly for urban schools. This issue is both urgent and global. To address this need in our local context, we designed and implemented a program called Transforming & Innovative Practices in STEM Education (TIPS) - a year-long program to recruit STEM majors into teaching. This paper is a report on lessons learned from the year-long pilot of the TIPS project. In this report, we provide an overview of the program design, implementation, and some of the lessons learned when we attempted to recruit high quality STEM majors into teaching. The purpose is to share the impact of this collaborative project between Education and STEM faculty.
