This research paper aimed to explore medical students’ lived experiences during clerkship, and to investigate keys to quality workplace learning. By synthesizing professional socialization and workplace learning, a theoretical framework was developed to guide this 2-year, 4-staged qualitative inquiry. Data sources included field notes, photos, and semi-structured interviews with 47 participants. Key findings show that attending physicians played critical roles, which increased organizational affordances of workplace learning, and enhanced quality learners’ participation. Clerks’ functionality should also be addressed and maximized to raise satisfaction and professional socialization.
