Abstract

Unlike quantitative methodologists, who can specify parameters and simulate data to empirically test different research methods, mixed methods research (MMR) methodologists cannot empirically test one approach to integrating quantitative and qualitative methods against another approach. One way MMR scholars conduct research on use of MMR is through systematic methodological reviews of empirical MMR studies. Unfortunately, there is little guidance to MMR scholars in how to conduct these types of reviews, hence the scope and level of detail are quite variable. Our purpose is to present findings of a review of 78 MMR systematic methodological reviews in order to identify best practices that will guide future MMR reviews.
