Transformative Cultural Consciousness in Student Affairs Practice: A Critical Review of the Literature

Sat, April 18, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Student affairs professionals must strive to address the needs of an increasingly culturally and racially diverse student population. As such, this review critically examines scholarly research concerning cultural competence over the last 25 years pertaining to students, student affairs professionals, and faculty members. This review also proposes to suspend and replace terms such as cultural competence and multicultural competence with a new concept we refer to as transformative cultural consciousness—or TCC—to engage more critical perspectives and practices in student affairs. The article concludes with a discussion of critical gaps in existing research and questions that warrant further research.
