Effectiveness of Lesson Study for Improving Education for High-Ability Students in Flanders (Belgium)

Tue, April 21, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Lesson Study (LS) is a method for professional learning which is founded in classroom and research-based practice. After exploring the different variants of LS, the format of Pete Dudley (U.K.), was used to implement LS in Flanders (Belgium). Within three LS’s in six schools, 13 teachers explored in which way LS was effective for improving education for high ability students in primary and secondary education. In this format of LS full ownership of the implementation process was given to the teachers and limited input from experts or facilitators. Based on in-depth interviews and focus groups with the participating teachers, we were able to map the perceived effects of the LS method on teacher level and the impact on high-ability students.
