In England Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs or CMOs) are the favoured governance structure and there are a growing number of school-led MATs which are established by educational leaders who exercise their agency and become CEOs of these new groups of academies (or charters). This multi-site case study reports on three such instances and explores the identities, values and motivations of these CEOs and founders in establishing and developing MATs. The extent to which these values and beliefs map onto the vision and mission of the MAT is considered and this is important because the study aims to explore how localised community/ies are conceptualised and constructed within (and against) these discursive practices and processes.
