A Place Between School and Home: Students' Perception of the Role of Shadow Education in Their School Career

Mon, April 20, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Worldwide, the use of shadow education is increasing. In some countries, shadow education is undergoing a transition from a marginal phenomenon to a regular educational practice. In other countries, shadow education has been a standard part of the school career for most students for a longer time. To gain insight into the role that shadow education plays in students’ school career, we conducted a qualitative study in which secondary education students gave their interpretations of shadow education. Our results demonstrate that students see shadow education as an educational institution that exists between the home and school. This poster thus functions as a platform to reflect upon the progressively prominent position of shadow education in the educational landscape.
