Exploring Sequential Behavioral Patterns of Collaborative Knowledge-Building for University Students in Online Discussions

Abstract

With the support of an asynchronous discussion forum, students can construct knowledge by asking questions and explaining through effective online collaborative learning. However, the invisibility of the collaborative learning processes makes it difficult to assess students' dynamic development of knowledge building. The behavioral patterns were explored by analyzing the online discussions generated by 27 participants enrolled in an undergraduate program in a university of Shanghai. A total of 787 notes posed by students on the online discussion forum were analyzed using lag sequential analysis. The results indicate that there is a cycle of explanations and questions, in which clarification and challenging questions promote knowledge building and sustained inquiry. This study can conduct educators to engage students in collaborative knowledge building.
