Representation Matters: Using PhotoVoice to Understand Black Girls' Educational Experiences

Abstract

This study examined the educational experiences of adolescent Black girls as they intersect with their racialized and gendered bodies. Through a Black feminist and Black girlhood theoretical lens, I used photovoice in order to answer the following research questions; (1 How do Black girls make meaning of their intersectional identities through images, words, and narratives? (a How do these reproduce and/or challenge dominant discourses?
(2 What is the role of school, popular culture, public discourse, and education research in Black girls’ constructions and meaning making of self and educational experiences? Using co-created prompts, Black girls from a leadership and mentoring program took pictures, interviewed, and participated in focus groups to co-create knowledge about themselves and their experiences.
