The Pedagogical Transformation of Faculty Teaching in an Active Learning Classroom: A Case Study Analysis

Abstract

Research on Active Learning Classroom (ALC) has shown the positive influence space has on the educational experiences of students. Collaborative spaces consisting of moveable chairs, group computers, and floor to ceiling whiteboard create an engaging environment for students to further their higher-order skills. However, how do Active Learning Classrooms influence the professor teaching in these spaces? This study examines how two faculty members discuss and demonstrate aspects of active learning in their approach to teaching and student-faculty interaction using placed-based interviewing. The results from this study will provide further analysis of the faculty’s experience in Active Learning Classrooms and assist in improving Active Learning Classroom professional development.
