Visual Citizenship

Tue, April 21, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is give college professors a new method to challenge their students to think about, describe and criticize the world in which they live. Specifically, I wanted students to think about citizenship in new and different ways. This was accomplished with the use of student created mini-comics (Bitz, 2010; Buckey-Carter, 2013; Thompson 2018). The comic book medium may offer tremendous possibilities for students to utilize what Arnheim (1997) called visual thinking and arts based research techniques (Barone & Eisner, 2012). The purpose of this paper is to show how this might be done. I will provide examples from my own college class.
