Codable Robots and Math Learning: What's the Value Added?

Abstract

Educational robots are surfacing in more and more K12 classrooms and hold promise for students that have traditionally struggled in math. In this mixed methods study we measured sixth grade students’ math learning with pre- post- tests on two different math topics using robots as the treatment. Lessons were also recorded to examine students’ use of academic language and students’ persistence with problem-solving. Initial analyses indicate that while no significant gain was made from pre- to post-tests, the quality of students’ use of academic language and persistence with problem-solving varied when using robots indicating that the use of educational robots in math class may be promising, especially for students that traditionally struggle in math.
