Apartheid of Knowledge: Women of Color Leaders Proving Competency in K–16 Spaces

Abstract

As we continue to make strides in the research canon for women leaders in K-16 spaces, it is imperative that we continue to document their experiences. Delgado Bernal and Villalpando (2002) posit scholars in institutions of higher education struggle to prove competency in terms of the legitimacy of the knowledge they possess, the research they engage in and the academic content they write about. This paper presentation speaks to women leaders of color in K-12 school districts and institutions of higher education as they communicate their personal struggles to maintain balance and lead in their field while constantly having to prove their competency in their work spaces.
