Perspectives on Career- and College-Readiness Self-Efficacy of Rural International Baccalaureate Adolescents

Abstract

Rural schools face challenges that are often different than non-rural schools. Despite these challenges, rural IB students are vastly underrepresented in the education research. This study attempts to understand and learn the many ways rural IB students prepare and ready themselves to be career and college ready. Four main themes emerged: (a) confident in my support system, (b) confident in navigating a system, (c) confident in my social and emotional skills and (d) confident in navigating the financial aid process. By centering the themes of these participants using a thematic analysis approach, this study offers important implications for educators in rural education settings as they seek to increase the college and career readiness self-efficacy of rural IB students.
