Designing innovative, technology-enhanced learning environments has been the traditional role of entrepreneurs and instructional scientists. These efforts build and generate knowledge, known as ‘design knowledge’. In this research we aim to understand how diverse audiences can be supported in advancing design knowledge. Specifically, we focus on the design of games for learning, authored on the to-be-education (TBE) role-playing game environment. As a first step in this direction, we performed a needs analysis study among the different stakeholders. Eleven TBE game designers and players were interviewed, revealing eight aspects of authentic design knowledge. Based on these findings, we conclude that an educational, citizen science research that engages teachers, students and instructional scientists to advance design knowledge holds great promise.
