A Multilevel Regression Approach to the Relationship Between Citizenship Education and Academic Achievement in Chile

Abstract

Using data from ICCS 2016 and SIMCE achievement scores in Chile, this research shed light on the relationship between Citizenship Education (Pragmatic and Affective dimensions) and students' academic outcomes, proposing that more respectful, democratic, and participative classrooms environments would positively impact students' academic achievement. By Adopting a utilitarian approach, the final purpose is to make Citizenship Education matters for Educational policy-makers, particularly in countries where standardized assessments have dangerously narrowed the concept of educational quality. If any relationship between Citizenship Education and academic achievement exists, stakeholders for whom the main concern is students' achievement and not the way they are prepared to commit themselves to democratic values should be concerned about it anyway.
