Teacher and Principal Perceptions of Southeastern Middle School Practices

Abstract

We conducted a study in the Southeastern U.S. to examine the perceptions of teachers and principals concerning current middle level practices, as well as the challenges to the implementation of these practices. A survey was developed and adapted from McEwin’s and Greene’s (2009) national survey of middle school practices before being administered to a simple, randomized sample of teachers and principals. Results suggest that principals and teachers shared similar beliefs among several practices, including “valuing working with young adolescents” and “having a safe and supportive environment.” Several discrepancies existed with respect to perceptions of principals and teachers, notably dealing with having a shared vision and goals and student behavior. A discussion regarding the significance follows the results.
