Abstract

English as a Second Language (ESL) programs are designed to level the playing field for English Learners (ELs). However, the evidence is mixed regarding whether ESL programs improve schooling outcomes. Some evidence suggest that ESL programs hinder educational opportunities for ELs because it lowers their chances of enrolling in rigorous academic programs, such as Advanced Placement, which in turn may alter their educational trajectories. However, studies on ESL typically focus on short-term outcomes rather than longer term outcomes such as college attendance and selection. We address gap by examining the role of English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum on the college attendance and selection among English learner (EL).
