Q Methodology as Mixed-Methods Research: An Example Case From Patient Empowerment

Tue, April 21, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Purpose: Use Q methodology to operationally define patient empowerment from a patient perspective. Method: Use a five step Q methodology process: (1) Define the concourse; (2) Create the Q set; (3) Form a P set (n=88 participants) and conduct the Q sort; (4) Participant interviews; and (5) Factor analysis and interpretation of the Q sort data. Results: Based on the factor analysis of the responses and the qualitative interviews, four ‘distinct types’ of patient empowerment emerged: (1) Communication with Health Care Provider; (2) Access to Information; (3) Reduce Uncertainty; and (4) Self-Manage Health. Discussion: In addition to discussing the results, practical recommendations and lessons learned for conducting Q methodology based on researcher experiences and participant voices will be shared.
