The Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI; Weinstein et al. 1987; 2002; 2017) is a prominent instrument used in thousands of institutions worldwide. Despite its widespread prevalence in education, there are inconsistencies regarding the latent structure of the instrument. Using meta-analytic SEM (MASEM), we tested the model fit of three higher-order factor structure models proposed by prior literature within a dataset of 86 studies and their intercorrelations among the LASSI’s 10 subscales. We found that one model had the most parsimonious fit and this was invariant against a number of moderators. Our study highlights the use of MASEM in psychometric applications to help drive theoretical development in the learning sciences as well as implications regarding the instruction of learning strategies.
