The Destruction of the Common in the Voice of Teachers: The Chilean Case

Abstract

This paper analyzes the concept of citizenship and its equivalence with the political and the common through the teaching discourses linked to the implementation of the civic education plan in Chilean schools. The analysis of 80 individual interviews and two focus groups to secondary school teachers raise several cluster categories. This matrix brings together discursive lines linked to a construction of subject rendered, annulled and self-marginalized, in logics of submission, competitiveness and unsupportive individualism. On the other hand discourses of a commercialized school are added, in which the economic value is a supreme value that operates managing practices. Teachers complain about the culture of bureaucratization and accountability in which they are captured, linked to the homogenizing measurement of standardized tests
