Becoming a Competent Classroom Manager: An Experience of Preservice Teachers Training in Classroom Management

Tue, April 21, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Despite the importance that classroom management has in teacher job satisfaction and for student development, preservice teacher training related to classroom management skills is practically non-existent in Colombia. This study focused on the design, implementation and evaluation of a classroom management programme for preservice teachers in an undergraduate programme in a private university in Colombia. Eleven undergraduate students of the School of Education participated in a 15-week course, which focused on the development of skills and attitudes. Results indicated that preservice teachers developed classroom management self-efficacy, socioemotional skills, non-controlling, autonomy-related and caring attitudes towards classroom management. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for teachers’ education.
