Perceptions of Self-Concept for Multiracial College Students: A Mixed-Methods Study

Abstract

This study focuses on multiracial identity development by exploring the perceptions of multiracial college students of their self-concept within the United States. This study specifically examined the behaviors and activities multiracial college students engaged in, in order to identify factors that affect their self-understanding and to consider the role of the higher education institution in supporting those factors. An explanatory sequential mixed methods research design was conducted with the analysis of existing data provided by UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) and five phenomenological interviews. The results suggest an increase in self-understanding despite the high rates of positive and negative cross-racial interactions multiracial students experience.
