This article on hand implemented a quantitative study which aims to understand the effect of parental engagement on child reading outcomes in Canada through a hierarchical linear modeling analysis. The study utilized data from the PIRLS and included 9,871 fourth graders that are nested within 925 schools. The results showed that parental engagement with a child’s homework has a negative effect on the reading outcomes while school-level overall parental engagement has a positive effect. The findings indicate that parental engagement in education plays a significant role in child’s reading competence, and it calls for further research to reveal how does parental engagement with child’s homework impact child’s reading performance.
