The Influence of Emotional and Motivational Variables on Mathematics Performance in Secondary School Students

Abstract

The study of the cognitive factors which determine academic achievement in mathematics is a well-documented area. Not only cognitive factors are important, but also the relationship between students’ affective-motivational components and mathematical performance. Therefore, in this study we examine the influence of emotional and motivational variables on mathematical performance. Our sample comprised a total of 2365 students of Secondary Education. A hierarchical regression analysis was carried out to analyze the data. The present study finds that, although intellectual capacity is necessary to obtain a certain mathematical performance, emotional / motivational variables play a crucial role, even explaining a percentage of variance greater in some of the cases.
