Así Soy Yo: Counternarrative Creation in Community-Based Education Spaces

Abstract

This paper highlights part of my doctoral research which focused on a community-run academic support and mentoring program designed to combat the high pushout rates of youth in Latinx and Portuguese-speaking communities in Toronto, Canada. Using a transnational latina feminist framework, I examine interview and observational data to see how these families are creating their own spaces of counternarrative creation that speak back to the deficit-framed stereotypes about these two communities. Instead, they use these community spaces to reclaim educational spaces and reinterpret possibilities for their families.
