Mentoring programs continue to be an essential source of professional development for employees throughout their careers. However, research on mentoring programs has not kept pace with the proliferation of mentoring programs across organizational contexts. There are studies that identified the benefits of participation in mentoring programs but lack a focus on and critique of the research designs and typical features of mentoring programs. Aligned with the AERA 2020 conference theme’s focus on “The Power and Possibilities for the Public Good When Researchers and Organizational Stakeholders Collaborate”, this paper reviews and critiques the research done on formal mentoring programs.
