An Assessment Model for Increasing Educational Psychology Students' Understanding of Course Content

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This proposal outlines an assessment model designed to increase students’ understanding of the concepts, principles, theories and research that make up the content of educational psychology courses. The models’ theoretical framework is grounded in the concept of assessment for student learning combined with self-determination motivation theory. It is supported by a comprehensive review of research indicating that assessment is one of the most powerful learning tools that exists. The model proposes using frequent and thorough assessments composed of a combination of selected-response and written response items that measure learning above the knowledge and recall levels, combined with detailed feedback, and a mechanism designed to make the model efficient and applicable in educational psychology courses. Suggestions for further research are included.
