Localizing Civics: Providing Elementary Students Opportunities to Engage With Locally Relevant Civics Through a Collaborative Partnership

Sat, April 18, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

In this study, a university-based researcher, two school district-based researchers, and eight second-grade teachers collaboratively designed and implemented a 10-lesson, project-based civics curriculum centered around locally-relevant public issues. Findings revealed several categories of “local relevance” bound within various contexts. Additionally, findings suggest that the district-university partnership benefitted the curricular design and implementation processes.
