Location, Location, Location: The Relationship Between Novice Teacher Preparation Location and Turnover From Connecticut

Mon, April 20, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

In any year, several states’ grant initial licenses to significant fractions of out-of-state prepared novice teachers even though this group exhibits strong geographic preferences. With three years of Connecticut employment data, I estimate a district fixed effect model of the relationship between teachers’ preparation location and turnover. Novice teachers prepared out-of-state were more likely to attrition and less likely to move districts compared to in-state prepared peers. Out-of-state prepared teachers working over 30 miles from the state border exited more and moved to other districts less often than out-of-state peers within 10 miles of another state. These findings have implications for employees in administrative and human resource positions who may design induction programs to acclimate out-of-state prepared teachers to unfamiliar communities.
