How Do Diversity and Equity Programs in K–12 Schools Support LGBTQ Youth? A National Study of District-Level "Diversity Mentors"

Abstract

This project develops a deeper understanding of the roles that “Diversity Mentors” play in K-12 school districts. A “Diversity Mentor” is defined as anyone employed by a K-12 public school district who is primarily responsible for leading district-wide initiatives on equity and diversity-related topics. This study explores how these roles are structured in districts, the kinds of priorities they focus on, and how these individuals were prepared to take on this important role. This study focused on states that have explicit legal protections for sexual orientation and gender expression in k-12 schools to also learn if and how Diversity Mentors incorporate educational efforts about gender and sexual diversity in their work.
