Fit for Life: The Purpose of Education Through Lenses of Capacity, Passion, Relevance, and Presence

Abstract

This study explores perceptions of educators on the holistic purpose of public K-12 education in North Dakota through lenses of Capacity, Passion, Relevance and Presence. Quantitative and qualitative results represent 143 survey respondents and six focus group participants. Findings suggest that educators in this study believe K-12 public schools in ND should have at least some responsibility in equipping students to be fit for life by holistically developing them in terms of Capacity, Passion, Relevance, and Presence, and that there is room for improvement in how ND public K-12 education develops these areas in students. Subsequent research is recommended, which may support a more appropriately balanced allocation of resources toward the holistic development of students.
