Peace Education Curriculum Analysis: Looking for Peace in the Curricula of England and Mexico

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The Peace Education Curriculum Analysis Project (PECA) uses a mixed methods approach to explore the substance of national curricula. The content analysis looks for three components often found in peace education programmes in the curricular documents: recognizing violence (direct, structural or cultural), nonviolent conflict transformation and creating the conditions of positive peace. So far the analyses have found significant room for improvement in each national curriculum studied. This paper uses the examples of England and Mexico to demonstrate some trends that we have encountered. By placing the reports online at pecaproject.org and making the more detailed papers available, we hope to encourage government stakeholders to engage with the research and possibly integrate more peace education content into their next curricula.
