Incorporating Public Pedagogy in Health Professional Education: Learning Beyond the Classroom

Abstract

Public pedagogy refers to various teaching and learning activities occurring beyond the realm of formal educational settings, which are widely incorporated into various educational studies. Drawing from debates on public pedagogy in adult and medical education, the aim of this paper is to describe the processes and impact of utilizing public pedagogy to enhance oral health professionals’ learning in the oral cancer field. Through observations and in-depth interviews with students participating in an oral medicine and pathology course offered to undergraduates in a dental hygiene degree program, this paper suggests health science educators should shift attention to knowledge mobilization, everyday learning, human senses, and public engagement in health professionals’ preparation to achieve higher student engagement and successful learning.
