Measuring the Gaps in Talent Loss Using a Multiscale Ecological Approach

Abstract

Gifted underachievement is a loss not only in individual student life but also in society. A broader ecological perspective encompassing school and neighborhood factors needs to be examined beyond personal factors. The present study aimed to examine a) how gifted underachievers are geographically distributed in elementary schools in Colorado, and b) what school and neighborhood resources explain gifted underachievement. The proportion of gifted underachievers of 28 school districts is visualized on the map using Geographic Information System. Then, the result of multiple regression indicates that gifted underachievers are significantly less if a school district is located in a metro area. The implications are shortly discussed with a few limitations of the present study.
