Lessons Learned About Principal Leadership From a Catholic School Perspective

Abstract

This paper reports on the results of a shadow study of 19 elementary Catholic school principals in a large urban school system. Shadow data and subsequent interviews identified primary daily activities, impacts from external demands and principal perceptions of job performance and time management. Results of the shadow data were compared with the principal job description and evaluation framework used by district leaders to identify competing demands placed on principals’ time and effort. Interviews conducted with principals and district staff compared how both groups understood the principal role and perceived areas and resources that supported and interfered with principals’ daily routines and functions in carrying out their responsibilities.
