Tue, April 21, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The complex ways in which youths’ lives are entangled by various forms of media compels pedagogical conversations and research surrounding media education. Beyond repeating the pleas for media education and media literacies in formal education spaces, through this paper presentation I outline the ways in which the modernist discourse of Teacher can spoil the fun of media education, regardless of the pedagogical commitment of any individual teacher. In this paper, I draw on data fragments from an ethnographic study, place theories of media education in conversation with Deborah Britzman’s notion of teacher becoming, and attempt to further theories of media education.
