Classic attrition theory and Rovai’s composite persistence model, with consideration of doctoral persistence literature, provided a fertile ground for the development of an explanatory model for distance, doctoral persistence. In this presentation, we will present how we developed a distance, doctoral persistence model with the predictor variables of faculty integration (FI), student integration (SI), curriculum integration (CI), self-regulation (SR), self-directedness (SD), and self-efficacy (SE). We will then discuss the testing of the model using a quantitative, correlational research design and regression analysis. Finally, results demonstrating that the entire model significantly predicted whether or not online doctoral students persisted, will be discussed in light of previous research. Implications will be provided.
