If we want research to work for the public good, as the 2020 AERA conference theme proposes, it is essential to build research with policymakers. The concepts presented here draw upon foundational, methodological ideas by education researchers as well as human-centered design principles to empower policymakers to be part of the research process through collaborative research-practice partnerships (RPPs). This paper outlines five stages used to build collaborative RPP studies using techniques developed over years of work with RPP policymakers. Each stage outlines the purpose of it, the step-by-step procedures used to accomplish it, the social science research explaining why the technique works, and provides a real-life illustration of how the stage operates.
