Negotiating Ethics in Educational Research: Reflections on 20 Years of Race, Colonialism, and Community in Our Research

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Much of our time spent as qualitative researchers in the field has been devoted to dealing with ethical situations that will invariably come up. This theoretical paper involves reflections on our ethical choices as Black and Brown qualitative researchers. In what ways did we Other Others and in what ways did we resist contributing to the narrative of people of color that exists in the White imagination? How did our research and our ethical choices protect our communities (or not)? How did our research and ethical choices help our communities (or not)? In keeping with the theme of this year’s conference, we also interrogate the ways we did (or did not) include relevant stakeholders in our educational research.
