The Contribution of Mental Simulation to the Development of Intuition

Tue, April 21, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Intuition is an important quality of expertise which is developed through professionals’ learning through experience. It can be defined as the ability to recognize situational cues that allow experts to access memorized information spontaneously (Simon, 1992). An important contribution to the development of intuition comes from mental simulations. However, the relation between mental simulation and intuitive decision making is not yet explained (Harteis, 2017). Only few studies concerning this particular relationship exist. Crisis response workers offer counselling and support to victims in emergency situations. So far, research in the domain of crisis response is scarce. This contribution aims at (1) understanding the importance of intuition for CRW and (2) explaining in particular how mental simulation contributes to the development of intuition.
