Neighborhood Nip: Preparing Preservice Teachers for the Realities of Urban Classrooms and Communities

• In Event: Diversifying Field Experiences to Prepare Preservice Teachers to Teach All Learners

Abstract

We utilize Nipsey Hussle’s commitment to the community and our own backgrounds to inspire us to prepare white preservice teachers to recognize the power and possibilities in urban schools and communities. This paper highlights two Black professors use of the music and life of Nipsey and the Critical Hip Hop Pedagogy for Teacher Education framework to engage white preservice teachers:
1) in an archeological dig of self (Sealey-Ruiz, 2018)
2) in an exploration of the lived experiences (Rose, 2018), assets and conditions of Black and Brown youth;
3) to interrogate curriculum that disrupts and affirms the identities of Black and Brown youth, and
4) to develop a critical consciousness through critical service-learning (Mitchell, 2008).
