This paper examines how arts-based, inquiry-oriented pedagogies contributed to student learning and teacher empowerment in a teacher education program. We explore one strategy implemented in the Spring 2019 semester to facilitate arts integration: research journals. Inspired by Marshall’s (2016) “arts-based research”, using art as an integrative tool for teaching content, we mentored PSTs to develop research journals with a culturally and linguistically diverse population in a Title 1 elementary school. Drawing from interviews, photographic documentation, and researcher reflections, we are interpreting data to refine our model and articulate transferable teacher education possibilities. We examine the implications of research journals in elementary classrooms and, through reflection, establishing points of action for teacher educators.
